Description

Montana State University is offering a funded M.S. graduate research assistantship within the rangeland ecology lab of Dr. Georgia Harrison. Located in Bozeman, MT, this position focuses on developing integrated management strategies for invasive annual grasses in the northern Great Plains.

The selected student will lead a field-based project to evaluate how prescribed fire and herbicide treatments (indaziflam) work together to control invasive grasses and encourage the recovery of native plants in eastern Montana rangelands. This research is conducted in partnership with the USDA-ARS Fort Keogh, MSU Extension, and regional land managers.

Research Overview

This project uses a randomized block experimental design to study vegetation responses. As the graduate researcher, you will:

  • Assist with professional prescribed burns and herbicide applications.
  • Monitor and record plant community composition, biomass, and ground cover.
  • Evaluate how treatments impact both invasive species and desirable perennial plants.
  • Analyze ecological data and present findings to both the scientific community and land management professionals.

Funding and Benefits

  • Annual Stipend: $30,000.
  • Experience: Gain hands-on skills in field experimentation, invasive species management, and applied rangeland research.
  • Collaborative Environment: Work directly with federal agencies (USDA-ARS) and local extension partners.

Responsibilities

  • Execute field sampling and support experimental treatments.
  • Coordinate and supervise the tasks of an undergraduate field assistant.
  • Organize, manage, and analyze complex ecological datasets.
  • Lead the preparation of scientific manuscripts and present research at professional meetings.
  • Communicate results effectively to stakeholders and land managers.

Qualification Requirements

Required:

Education: A B.S. degree in rangeland ecology, ecology, natural resources, environmental science, or a closely related field.

    • Interests: A clear interest in applied rangeland management and field-based research.
    • Physical Ability: Willingness to work outdoors in remote locations and across variable weather conditions.

    Preferred:

    • Prior experience with plant identification or vegetation sampling techniques.
    • Experience with (or a strong interest in) data analysis using R.
    • Interest in invasive species management or the use of prescribed fire.

    Application Process

    Deadline: April 3rd
Start Date: May 2026 (preferred); Summer 2026 is negotiable.
