Description

Utah State University (USU) is seeking a highly motivated Ph.D. student to join a specialized research group focused on the advancement of concrete materials and structural systems. This position offers a unique opportunity for an aspiring scholar to engage in high-impact experimental research within a state-of-the-art laboratory environment. The successful candidate will contribute to the development of resilient infrastructure by investigating material characteristics and structural performance at various scales.

The research focus heavily emphasizes hands-on experimental work, providing students with practical experience in modern civil engineering challenges. Joining the research group at Utah State University allows students to work under expert supervision while contributing to innovative solutions in structural engineering. This role is ideal for dedicated researchers looking to bridge the gap between material science and structural application in a collaborative academic setting.

Responsibilities

Selected Ph.D. candidates will be deeply involved in the experimental lifecycle of structural research. Key responsibilities and research opportunities include:

  • Laboratory Operations: Preparing, mixing, and casting various concrete mixtures for experimental testing.
  • Material Characterization: Conducting standardized tests to evaluate the mechanical and physical properties of concrete materials.
  • Structural Testing: Participating in large-scale experimental programs to assess the performance of structural systems.
  • Data Analysis: Collecting and interpreting experimental data to advance knowledge in concrete technology.
  • UHPC Research: Engaging in the experimental evaluation of Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC), particularly for candidates with relevant prior experience.

Qualifications

To be considered for this Ph.D. position, applicants must meet specific academic and technical requirements:

  • Academic Degree: Applicants must hold a thesis-based M.S. degree in Civil Engineering.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in laboratory environments and comfort with physical tasks such as casting concrete and material testing.
  • Preferred Experience: Preference is given to candidates who have specific experience with Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC).
  • Language Proficiency: Submission of English language test scores is required for applicable international applicants.
  • Motivation: A strong interest in experimental research and structural systems is essential.

Application Process

Interested candidates should prepare their application materials carefully and follow the submission guidelines below:

  • Prepare Documentation: Gather your Curriculum Vitae (CV), unofficial undergraduate and graduate transcripts, and a brief statement of interest.
  • Statement of Interest: Your statement should clearly describe how your background and research experience align with concrete materials and structural testing.
  • Submit via Email: Send all materials, including language test scores (if applicable), directly to srishti.banerji@usu.edu.
  • Timeline: The position is available for start dates in either Fall 2026 or Spring 2027. Early availability is preferred.
