Description

Applications are currently being invited for a Postdoctoral Researcher position in the field of Mass Spectrometry (MS). This opportunity is being offered within a dynamic and collaborative research environment that is focused on advancing cutting-edge technologies and methodologies in multi-omics science. The position is being made available to individuals who possess a strong background in mass spectrometry and demonstrate a technological mindset. A problem-solving approach and the ability to work effectively within a team-oriented, service-driven setting will be considered essential qualities for the successful candidate. This role is being supported by access to state-of-the-art MS instrumentation and analytical platforms, which are routinely used in the exploration of complex biological systems. The postdoctoral researcher will be expected to contribute to the development, optimization, and application of mass spectrometry-based workflows that support multi-omics integration and high-resolution analysis. The Laboratory of Applied Mass Spectrometry (LAMaS) – KU Leuven is a leading research facility specializing in cutting-edge metabolomics and proteomics, located on the Gasthuisberg campus in Leuven. Our team utilizes advanced mass spectrometers coupled with liquid and gas chromatography instruments to generate comprehensive metabolic and proteomic profiles from diverse sample types (e.g., body fluids, cell lysates, and tissue lysates). These efforts contribute to advancing mass spectrometry research and the discovery of novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets in diseases such as cancer, inflammation, and neurodegeneration.

Responsibilities

As a Research Scientist, you will play a crucial role in optimizing and developing proteomics and metabolomics methods. Your responsibilities will also include maintaining high-end mass spectrometers, analyzing data using advanced software, and contributing to collaborative research projects. You will be halftime involved in a KU Leuven C3-industrial research funds (IOF) project headed by Prof Dr Koen Poesen and prof. Dr. Bart Ghesquiere. This projects focuses on valorizing candidate peptide biomarkers derived from the variable domains of circulating IgG as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers in chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP).

Key Areas of Focus:

  • Implementation and refinement of advanced MS techniques for proteomics, metabolomics, and other omics platforms
  • Contribution to method development and protocol standardization
  • Support for collaborative projects by offering expertise and guidance in mass spectrometry and data interpretation
  • Participation in publications, presentations, and technical reports derived from collaborative omics studies
  • Engagement in interdisciplinary team science efforts across research domains

Qualification

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A PhD in Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Systems Biology, or a closely related field
  • Demonstrated experience with advanced mass spectrometry instrumentation (e.g., Orbitrap, TOF, Q-Exactive, etc.)
  • Familiarity with multi-omics data integration and analysis tools
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot and optimize MS protocols independently
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative spirit
