Description
The Department of Computer Science at Indiana University (IU) is welcoming applications for fully supported doctoral candidates to join Professor Hyungsub Kim’s research group for the Fall 2027 academic term. This highly specialized lab focuses on securing cyber-physical systems (CPS), particularly exploring the safety frameworks of unmanned aerial vehicles, aerospace satellites, and self-driving cars.
Accepted students will design advanced algorithms and data structures meant to simulate security breaches, uncover hidden system weaknesses, and establish resilient defenses across hardware, machine learning, and software platforms. This is an excellent opportunity for prospective researchers to contribute to high-impact technological safety innovations.
Research Opportunities
Ph.D. researchers in this lab will engage directly with complex cybersecurity challenges. Core research pathways include:
- Simulating and evaluating physical attacks on hardware sensor networks.
- Examining open-source software infrastructures and hardware systems to identify critical security flaws.
- Creating automated tools designed to quickly detect system vulnerabilities and deploy immediate security patches.
- Applying formal methodologies and advanced program analysis to enhance overall digital security.
- Testing the durability, robustness, and defense mechanisms of artificial intelligence and machine learning applications.
Eligibility Criteria
To be considered for this doctoral position, candidates must meet the following academic and technical qualifications:
