Description
The Kim Eco Lab, located within the Department of Entomology at Kansas State University, is actively seeking two dedicated graduate students to join their research team. The lab focuses on the complex ecology of plant-insect interactions, specifically exploring how agricultural management and land-use changes impact these biological relationships. This is an incredible opportunity for aspiring scientists passionate about conservation and insect biology to conduct impactful research in a supportive academic setting.
Available Research Projects
Prospective students can apply for one of two distinct research tracks:
Project 1: Grassland Management and Pollinators (MSc Level): This role focuses on understanding how climate variables and land management strategies influence the population dynamics of insect pollinators. The successful candidate will conduct a blend of greenhouse studies, laboratory work, and hands-on fieldwork within the tallgrass prairie ecosystem.
Project 2: Regenerative Agriculture and Soybean Insects (MSc or PhD Level): This project evaluates the spatial distribution of beneficial insects and agricultural pests within Kansas soybean fields under regenerative land management practices. The position involves collecting field specimens in east-central Kansas and utilizing geographic information systems (GIS) to model species occurrences based on existing datasets.
Eligibility Criteria
To be considered a strong candidate for these positions, applicants must meet the following qualifications:
- Hold an academic background in ecology, biology, entomology, or a closely related field.
- Demonstrate a genuine interest in insect biology and environmental conservation.
- Possess prior hands-on experience with field research and collaborative scientific projects.
- Exhibit strong written and verbal communication skills, alongside a proven ability to work well within a team.
- For Project 1 (MSc): Candidates with prior experience in insect taxonomy will be given preference.
- For Project 2 (MSc/PhD): Applicants must showcase strong quantitative abilities, specifically with coding and GIS applications.
- For PhD Applicants: You must have already completed a Master’s degree prior to enrollment.
Funding Coverage and Benefits
Both positions are fully supported through competitive research assistantships, ensuring students can focus entirely on their studies and fieldwork.
- Complete coverage of university tuition fees.
- A regular living stipend to cover daily expenses and accommodation.
Important Dates
Application Deadline: July 31, 2026.
Target Start Date: Spring Semester (January 2027).
Alternative Start Dates: The lab is open to considering earlier starts in Fall 2026 or later starts in Summer 2027 depending on the candidate's availability.
Application Process
Interested candidates should prepare their documents carefully and apply directly via email. Please ensure you clearly indicate which of the two projects you are applying for in your message.
- Draft a comprehensive cover letter outlining your specific research interests and relevant academic qualifications.
- Update your Curriculum Vitae (CV) to include the names and contact information for three professional or academic references.
- Obtain a copy of your unofficial university transcripts.
- Email your complete application package to Dr. Tania Kim at tkim@ksu.edu before the deadline.
