The FAMU-FSU College of Engineering is offering a fully funded Ph.D. position in Civil Engineering starting in either Spring 2027 or Fall 2027. For this specific opening, a Spring 2027 start date is preferred. The selected candidate will join a collaborative, multi-university research initiative focused on developing artificial intelligence-driven, place-based environmental education and training methods. Students stepping into this role will actively participate in creating AI-assisted training systems, designing web-based simulations, and evaluating innovative educational tools meant to tackle complex environmental and infrastructure challenges.


Eligibility Criteria

This opportunity is designed for highly motivated postgraduate candidates who are ready to take on rigorous Ph.D. research.

  • Applicants must possess an M.S. degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related academic field.
  • Prospective students must demonstrate strong technical capabilities alongside a proven track record of research experience.
  • Candidates who have previously published papers, completed extensive thesis research, or engaged in substantial research projects are strongly encouraged to submit an application.
  • Submitting official GRE and TOEFL scores is a strict, non-negotiable requirement for all applicants to this research group.
  • Preferred candidates will have background experience in artificial intelligence, machine learning, Large Language Models (LLMs), or Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG).
  • Experience with Python programming, general software development, and web application building is highly valued.
  • Familiarity with immersive training simulations and interactive or web-based learning applications is considered a strong advantage.
  • Knowledge in the areas of environmental sustainability, solid waste management, or disaster debris handling is preferred. 


Funding Coverage

This program is fully funded, ensuring that students have the financial stability needed to focus entirely on their advanced academic work.

  • Selected students will be provided with a graduate stipend to assist with living expenses.
  • The position includes complete tuition support to cover academic fees.
  • Comprehensive health insurance benefits are also included in the funding package.
