The Department of Mechanical, Industrial, and Systems Engineering at the University of Rhode Island (URI) is seeking a highly motivated and talented student for a fully funded Ph.D. position in Mechanical Engineering. The successful applicant will join Dr. Vahid Jahangiri’s research group to participate in a dynamic and collaborative research team.

The research group focuses on complex dynamic systems, fluid-structure interactions, structural health monitoring, damage identification, vibration control, and experimental and numerical modeling. Research Areas

Students joining the research team will engage in advanced computational and experimental engineering projects. The primary research areas focus on addressing real-world engineering challenges, including:

  • Mooring cable dynamics and vibration control
  • Fluid–structure interaction and vortex-induced vibration
  • Offshore and ocean engineering systems

  • A fully funded Ph.D. position within the Department of Mechanical, Industrial, and Systems Engineering.
  • Financial coverage provided through a Research Assistantship (RA) and a Teaching Assistantship (TA).
  • Access to world-class facilities at the Fascitelli Center for Advanced Engineering located in Kingston, Rhode Island.
  • Priority consideration will be given to candidates who are currently residing in the United States and can commence their doctoral work immediately. 


Qualifications

Candidate Profile

Dr. Jahangiri's research group seeks candidates who possess strong technical capabilities and a passion for engineering innovation. To be eligible for this doctoral position, applicants should meet the following requirements:

  • Hold a Master's degree in mechanical engineering, ocean engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Possess a strong academic or research background in structural dynamics, fluid-structure interaction, vibrations, or numerical modeling.
  • Have practical programming experience utilizing MATLAB, Python, or alternative computing languages.
  • Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills necessary for presenting research findings and collaborating effectively.
