Description
The University of Southern California (USC) is looking for motivated and qualified PhD students to join its research programs for the Fall 2026 or Spring 2027 academic terms. These research positions focus on solving critical challenges in civil infrastructure and sustainable construction. Selected candidates will have the opportunity to conduct advanced research under expert faculty guidance at USC, bridging the gap between theoretical engineering concepts and real-world structural applications. The positions are open to both domestic and international applicants who are eager to contribute to impactful engineering innovations.
Responsibilities
Research Focus
Students will engage in cutting-edge laboratory testing, computational modeling, and data analysis within one of two primary research areas:
Noncorrosive Nonmetallic Reinforcement for Concrete Bridge Structures: Investigating alternative, high-durability materials to replace traditional steel reinforcement, aiming to extend the lifespan of bridge infrastructure and prevent corrosion-related degradation.
Sustainable and Earthquake-Resistant Earth Masonry: Developing and testing eco-friendly, low-carbon building materials and structural designs capable of withstanding seismic activity, promoting safer and more sustainable construction practices.
Qualification
Candidate Profile
Prospective students should meet the following qualification criteria to be considered for these PhD positions:
Hold a strong academic background in civil engineering, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, or a closely related discipline.
Demonstrate the academic readiness and research interest required for a rigorous doctoral program.
Possess strong written and oral communication skills to present research findings and write scholarly papers.
Prior experience in conducting structural or material testing, or a relevant Master's thesis, is highly valued.
Application Process
Interested and qualified candidates are required to submit their application materials directly via email. Follow these steps to apply:
Review the Open Positions: Visit the official USC faculty webpage and navigate to the "Open Positions" section to review the detailed informational flyers for each research project.
Prepare Application Materials: Assemble a current Curriculum Vitae (CV), a brief cover letter explaining how you meet the specific qualification criteria, and one sample publication (a completed Master's thesis is highly preferred, if available).
Submit via Email: Send the complete application package directly to the hiring faculty member as indicated on the USC website.
