Description

Murdoch University’s School of Engineering and Energy is offering a prestigious PhD scholarship aimed at tackling global energy poverty. This research project focuses on creating an "Innovative and Intelligent Hybrid Energy and Water System," designed to provide sustainable power and clean water to rural and remote communities in both Western Australia and Sub-Saharan Africa.  

The project involves developing a stand-alone power system (SAPS) that integrates solar energy, biomass backup, and IoT-enabled monitoring. As a successful candidate, you will help assess the technical and economic viability of this system, creating a framework for sustainable electrification that can be transferred across international borders.

Funding Coverage

The successful scholar will receive a PhD Scholarship stipend for the duration of the program (up to 3.5 years), paid directly by Murdoch University to support their research journey.  


Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for this research opportunity, you must demonstrate the academic and professional skills necessary to lead a high-level project. Applicants should meet at least one of the following requirements:

  • Honours Degree: A first-class Honours degree from Murdoch University or an equivalent qualification from another institution.  
  • Postgraduate Research: Completion of a Master’s degree or other postgraduate qualification that included a significant research project. 
  • Professional Experience: Significant work experience in conducting research, leading large projects, or publishing research findings. 
  • Technical Skills: A background in renewable energy systems design, water treatment modelling, or IoT technologies is a major advantage.  


Required Documents

Applicants must prepare the following materials for their submission:

  • Academic Transcripts: Complete records with a grading key.  
  • CV & Cover Letter: Highlighting relevant skills and experience (1-page limit for the cover letter).
  • Research Proposal: A brief outline (1 to 4 pages) related to the project topic. 
  • Evidence of Research: A list of publications, conference presentations, and professional projects. 
  • English Proficiency: An up-to-date certificate (IELTS: 6.5 overall, no band < 6.0; TOEFL iBT: 90; or PTE: 64). 
  • References: Two academic referee reports. 
  • Identification: A valid Passport or ID.

  • Prepare your EOI: Draft a research proposal (1–4 pages) explaining your interest in the hybrid energy and water system topic and your proposed approach.
