Description

The School of Civil Engineering at The University of Queensland (UQ) is offering a fully funded PhD scholarship for a high-achieving candidate to join a world-class research team in Brisbane. This project focuses on the intersection of urban hydrology, climate change, and nature-based solutions to mitigate urban flooding.

Project Overview

Urban areas are increasingly facing extreme rainfall and localized flooding. This research aims to uncover how urban structures—such as green spaces, building density, and spatial layouts—interact with the atmosphere to modify rainfall patterns.

Key Objectives:

  • Investigate the physical mechanisms behind urban rainfall modification.
  • Leverage "big data" and intensive computational modeling systems.
  • Develop a framework for using targeted green stormwater management to reduce flood risks and improve water quality.

    Funding & Benefits

    • Annual Stipend: $37,500 per annum (2026 rate), tax-free and indexed annually.
    • Tuition Fees: Fully covered for the duration of the program.
    • Research Environment: Access to cutting-edge computational resources and experimental facilities at UQ’s St Lucia campus.
    • Duration: Up to 3.5 years.

        Eligibility Criteria

        • Academic Background: A strong academic record in Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, Urban Hydrology, or a related field.
        • Degree Requirements: Must meet UQ’s PhD entry requirements (typically a Master’s by research or a Bachelor’s degree with Honours Class IIA or equivalent).
        • Desirable Skills: * Working knowledge of urban hydrology and nature-based solutions.
        • Experience with land/atmosphere interactions.
        • Background in atmospheric science or urban planning.
        • Proficiency in numerical modeling and data analysis.

          Before you apply

          • Check your eligibility for the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).
          • Prepare your documentation.
          • If you have any questions about whether the project is suitable for your research interests, contact Dr Jessica Eisma (j.eisma@uq.edu.au).
