Description

The Physics-informed Resilient Infrastructure and Structural Modeling (PRISM) Lab, led by Director Dr. Althaf Shajihan, invites enthusiastic candidates to apply for a fully funded Ph.D. position beginning in Fall 2027. This opportunity is offered through the collaborative UCSD-SDSU Joint Doctoral Program in Engineering Sciences. The laboratory focuses on advancing infrastructure resilience through innovative methods such as physics-informed machine learning, AI-driven digital twins, structural health testing, smart sensing with wireless sensors and unmanned aerial vehicles, and multi-modal generative AI for decision-making.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Academic Background: Must hold an M.S. degree in Civil/Structural Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field (B.S. degrees are evaluated if the applicant possesses substantial research experience).
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in programming languages including Python, MATLAB, and C/C++, paired with a strong interest in multidisciplinary investigation.
  • Research Experience: Prior background in domains such as Deep Learning (PINNs), Computer Vision, Generative AI (LLMs/VLMs), Structural Dynamics, High-Performance Computing (HPC), or Bayesian modeling.
