Description

The Data-Driven Mechanics Laboratory (LMD) at EPFL is currently accepting applications for a fully funded PhD position. This four-year academic program centers on the exciting intersection of computational mechanics, interpretable machine learning, and the multiphysics of geomaterials. The chosen candidate will investigate fundamental governing equations and complex processes across various scales, applying their findings to critical areas like sustainability, energy, and geophysics. This opportunity enables students to drive forward next-generation modeling using extensive experimental and micromechanical datasets. The expected start date for this role is during the Fall or Winter of 2026.

Responsibilities

PhD candidates in this program will take on the following key roles:

  • Contribute to a cutting-edge, data-driven framework dedicated to scientific discovery within the geomaterials sector.
  • Develop and refine innovative methodologies that bridge artificial intelligence and mechanics, including neurosymbolic AI and thermodynamics-informed machine learning.
  • Execute physics-based modeling that spans multiple levels, specifically the continuum, mesoscale, and discrete scales.
  • Spearhead international collaborative projects by working directly with global experimental research teams.

Qualification

To be considered for this doctoral position, prospective students must meet these exact criteria:

  • Possess a Master's degree in a relevant discipline, such as Computational Science, Applied Mathematics, Geophysics, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or Mechanics.
  • Showcase advanced programming and computational skills, particularly in languages like Python, C, or C++.
  • Have a robust academic foundation in both scientific machine learning and computational mechanics.
  • Demonstrate outstanding written and verbal communication abilities in English.

Scholarship Value & Benefits

This fully funded position offers significant academic, professional, and personal advantages:

  • A highly competitive salary paired with exceptional employment terms.
  • Unrestricted access to world-class computational resources and top-tier research infrastructure.
  • The opportunity to participate in interdisciplinary, boundary-pushing research at the LMD.
  • A dynamic and multicultural academic environment situated on the beautiful shores of Lake Leman.

Application Procedure

The application process is entirely digital and requires careful attention to detail:

  • Compile a single PDF document containing three specific components: a maximum two-page Curriculum Vitae (which must include contact information for at least two referees), your detailed academic transcripts, and a motivation letter not exceeding one page.
  • Email this consolidated PDF directly to konstantinos.karapiperis@epfl.ch.
  • Use the precise subject line format: "PhD Application LMD – Last Name".
  • Submit your complete application package before the strict deadline of July 15, 2026.
  • Keep in mind that the admissions panel will review applications on a rolling basis in the order they are received, meaning early submission is strongly encouraged.
  • If you have any questions or require further clarification, you may contact Prof. Kostas Karapiperis at the same application email address.
