The Vance-Chalcraft Lab at East Carolina University (ECU) is officially inviting applications for two research-focused positions starting in August 2026. This is a unique opportunity for students passionate about biology education research to join a lab dedicated to improving how science is taught and how it impacts the community.

Available Positions & Programs

Ph.D. Position: The successful candidate will enroll in the Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program in Biology, Biomedicine, and Chemistry (IDPBBC).
M.S. Position: The successful candidate will join the M.S. Biology program.

Research Focus

Selected students will primarily contribute to a multi-institutional study investigating learning outcomes in undergraduate courses that utilize participatory science (citizen science) projects.

The lab also explores several other key research areas:

  • Teamwork Training: Evaluating if teamwork instruction improves student connections and competencies in undergraduate research environments.
  • Community Impact: Studying how community science involvement builds social capital and helps solve local environmental problems.
  • Methodology: The lab utilizes a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods.
