Description

The laboratory of Associate Professor Guiyan Zang at Washington State University (WSU) Tri-Cities is actively seeking motivated candidates for two Ph.D. positions and several Master’s positions starting in August 2026.

This research group operates within the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and is closely affiliated with the Bioproducts, Sciences, and Engineering Laboratory (BSEL), a unique partnership between WSU and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL). Selected students will engage in cutting-edge research focused on decarbonization, energy systems, and computational sustainability. The lab utilizes Techno-Economic Analysis (TEA) and Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) to evaluate and design next-generation energy technologies, offering students a chance to work at the intersection of engineering, environmental science, and data analytics.

This is an exceptional opportunity for students to gain expertise in system design, emissions quantification, and supply chain projection while working in a world-class research facility in Richland, Washington.

Research Focus

Successful candidates will conduct research in one or more of the following critical areas:

  • Low-Carbon Fuel & Material Production: Investigating the economic viability and environmental impact of novel fuel production pathways and sustainable materials.
  • Data Center Power Supplement: Analyzing energy solutions to support the growing power demands of data centers while maintaining sustainability goals.
  • AI/ML-Based Supply Chain Analysis: Utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) techniques to optimize supply chains and assess their resilience and carbon footprint.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for these funded research positions, applicants should meet the following qualifications:

  • Academic Background: A degree in Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Science, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Research Interest: A strong interest in techno-economic analysis, life cycle assessment, and computational modeling for energy systems.
  • Skills: Proficiency in data analysis, modeling, or programming is highly advantageous for the AI/ML-focused tracks.

    Application Process

Interested candidates should follow the steps below to express interest before submitting a formal university application.

    1. Initial Expression of Interest Candidates are encouraged to contact Dr. Guiyan Zang directly via email. Please include the following materials in your correspondence:

    • Curriculum Vitae (CV)
    • Academic Transcripts
