Responsibilities

Research Focus

The primary objective of this fellowship is to develop and deploy Applied AI solutions for the environmental and forestry sectors. Key research activities will include:

  1. Weed Detection: Develop and implement advanced computer vision and machine learning algorithms to accurately identify invasive weed species in diverse and complex forestry environments.
  2. Mapping & Monitoring: Utilize AI and geospatial technologies to generate precise maps that support land management, ecological monitoring, and conservation efforts.
  3. Applied Solutions: Translate theoretical AI models into practical, deployable tools and workflows that forestry managers and industry partners can use directly in the field.
  4. Data Analysis: Process, clean, and analyze large-scale datasets derived from remote sensing, UAV imagery, or field-based sensors to support model training and validation.
  5. Integration with Industry: Collaborate closely with industry and governmental stakeholders to ensure AI solutions meet real-world operational needs and contribute to sustainable forestry management.

Qualification

Eligibility Criteria

To be competitive for this research fellowship, applicants should possess: 

  1. Academic Qualification: Applicants should hold a PhD, or be close to completing a PhD, in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Engineering, Data Science, or a closely related discipline. Candidates nearing completion must be able to demonstrate a clear timeline for submission and conferral of the degree.
  2. Core AI and Machine Learning Expertise: A strong theoretical and practical foundation in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning is essential. This includes experience with modern ML techniques, model development, training, evaluation, and optimization for real-world datasets.
  3. Computer Vision Experience (Highly Desirable): Demonstrated experience in Computer Vision is strongly preferred, particularly in areas such as object detection, image classification, segmentation, or spatial mapping.
