Description

A doctoral research position in hypersonic aerodynamics is being offered by the Department of Aerospace Engineering at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. One motivated PhD student is sought to join a specialized research laboratory focusing on cutting-edge hypersonic vehicle technologies beginning in Spring or Fall 2026. The research laboratory specializes in hypersonic aerodynamics, a critical field addressing vehicles capable of traveling at velocities exceeding Mach 5 (five times the speed of sound). These advanced systems represent the future of ultra-high-speed transportation and have the potential to revolutionize intercontinental travel; enabling journeys such as Miami to Sydney, Australia, in under three hours. This position is ideal for motivated individuals with a strong foundation in aerospace or mechanical engineering and a demonstrated passion for aerodynamics and propulsion research. Applicants with prior research experience and the ability to work independently in challenging research settings will be highly regarded.

Responsibilities

Research Opportunities

Throughout the doctoral program, the following research opportunities will be available:

Primary Research Areas:

  1. Design and manufacture of state-of-the-art hypersonic wind tunnel facilities
  2. Advanced propulsion system concepts and development
  3. Computational and experimental hypersonic aerodynamics
  4. High-speed flow physics and characterization
  5. Thermal management systems for hypersonic vehicles
  6. Aerothermodynamic testing methodologies

Laboratory Capabilities:
