Description

A postdoctoral researcher is being recruited to join the Palma Medina Laboratory at the renowned Karolinska Institutet in Sweden. The position is based at the Center for Infectious Medicine (CIM), located within the cutting-edge ANA Futura research facility, and focuses on infection biology and host-pathogen interactions. The research is aimed at identifying host and microbial factors responsible for transforming opportunistic pathogens from harmless colonizers into invasive agents causing severe infections. Through this work, novel biomarkers for early diagnosis and pathways for therapeutic intervention are expected to be uncovered.

Responsibilities

What have to do?

The successful candidate will be responsible for designing in vitro soft tissue infection models, including organotypic 3D and microfluidic systems. These models will reflect clinical observations derived from biopsy transcriptomics, immunoprofiling, and plasma proteomics. Mechanistic in vitro studies using these models will be conducted to examine host-pathogen immune responses and metabolic alterations, with a goal to identify critical pathways contributing to infection severity.

Qualification

  • A PhD or equivalent foreign degree in cell biology, microbiology, immunology, or a related field is required.
  • Practical expertise in cell culture is essential for this position.
  • Experience with 3D models, microfluidics, or organoids is highly advantageous.
  • Skills in single-cell RNA sequencing, microscopy, and omics data analysis are beneficial.
  • Familiarity with bacterial pathogens is preferred.
  • Strong collaborative and interdisciplinary research abilities are expected.
  • Fluency in English, both written and spoken, is required.

Karolinska Institutet offers an international, multidisciplinary research environment with strong ties to clinical practice. As a leading medical university, it provides a stimulating academic atmosphere and access to extensive scientific networks. Applications must be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system and should include a PhD certificate, CV with publication list, a personal letter, and references. The deadline for applications is 15 August 2025.
