Description

Idaho National Laboratory (INL) is seeking a motivated Postdoctoral Research Fellow with expertise in electric field assisted sintering (EFAS) and titanium processing. The successful candidate will join the Advanced Manufacturing research team within the Materials and Manufacturing Department at INL’s Energy, Environment Science & Technology Directorate. The role involves conducting advanced research in the development, optimization, and scale-up of titanium processing to enhance domestic supply chains. Responsibilities include supporting ongoing projects in powder processing, feedstock control, advanced sintering, and 3D printing technologies. This opportunity offers an interdisciplinary, collaborative environment within a leading national lab. The position is based in Idaho Falls, following a 9x80 work schedule with every other Friday off. It’s ideal for a researcher ready to contribute to impactful, applied science. INL provides world-class facilities and a strong culture of innovation.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities Include:

  • Conduct experimental research on the sintering of titanium and titanium alloy powders.
  • Develop and optimize sintering processes to enhance material properties such as density, mechanical strength, and micro-structural uniformity.
  • Project management support for a project with compressed timeline.
  • Characterize/understand how to interpret data collected from materials using advanced techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and mechanical testing.
  • Analyze experimental data and develop models to understand the sintering behavior and mechanisms of formation in materials.
  • Collaborate with other researchers and engineers within INL and with external partners to advance the understanding and application of field assisted sintering as it pertains to materials for harsh environments.
  • Prepare and publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at scientific conferences.
  • Contribute to the preparation of research proposals.
  • Contribute to the preparation of research project reports.

Qualification

Minimum Requirements:

  • PhD in Materials Science, Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field with a focus on sintering and/or titanium metallurgy.
  • Strong background in sintering processes, powder metallurgy, and material characterization techniques.
  • Experience with titanium or similar alloys, including their properties and applications.
  • Proficiency in advanced data computational and analytical software.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research environment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with advanced characterization tools and techniques.
  • Demonstrated track record of publications in high-impact scientific journals.
