Description
Support for high-achieving research students is being offered through the Research Training Program (RTP), which is funded by the Australian Government. These awards are intended for those pursuing advanced academic research and include: An annual tax-free stipend of AUD 41,753 (2025 value), assistance with relocation and costs related to thesis submission. For international recipients: complete tuition fee coverage and student health insurance, both Australian nationals and international applicants aiming to enroll in a Higher Degree by Research (HDR) at the University of Sydney are considered eligible.
Eligibility
Selection for the RTP Scholarship is made based on academic achievements and research potential. To qualify:
- Applicants must be enrolled in, or applying for, a PhD or a Master’s by Research
- Academic records and research capabilities must be demonstrated clearly
- A separate scholarship application must be submitted following the admission application
Current students undertaking HDR programs may also apply.
Application Timeline
Review of applications occurs in designated rounds, aligned with specific research periods. Key submission deadlines for international applicants are: For Research Periods 1 & 2 (2026): Applications must be submitted by 12 September 2025. For Research Periods 3 & 4 (2026): The deadline is 19 December 2025. Applicants will be notified of their results by either December 2025 or March 2026, depending on the application round.
Financial Support
Awardees will be provided with a generous package, which includes:
- AUD 41,753 per year as a living allowance (tax-free)
- Support for relocation expenses for eligible candidates
- A thesis allowance to assist with final submission costs
- A full tuition fee exemption for qualified international students
- Health insurance (OSHC) for overseas recipients
The funding is valid for up to 3.5 years for doctoral research and 2 years for research master’s degrees, with extensions available under certain conditions.

Candidates must first apply for admission into a research program at the University of Sydney. Once this step is complete, the RTP application may be submitted online before the specified deadline.
