The Graduate School of Economic and Management Sciences (GEM) at Stellenbosch University is offering the prestigious GEM Elite Doctoral Scholarships for full-time PhD studies starting in January 2026. This opportunity is open to exceptional candidates who aim to pursue research-intensive doctoral programs in a vibrant academic environment.
Scholarship Value
Each selected candidate will receive a fully funded scholarship worth R200,000 per year, renewable for up to three years. This funding is designed to support students during their full-time, on-campus doctoral journey.
Who Should Apply?
Eligible applicants must:
- Hold a Master’s degree in a relevant field, with a final grade of 70% or higher.
- Meet the doctoral admission requirements of Stellenbosch University.
- Present a strong and relevant research concept note that aligns with one of the university’s approved themes.
- Be either a South African or an international student. Priority may be given to South African citizens from previously disadvantaged backgrounds.
What does the Scholarship Cover?
- Full-time study support for up to three years
- Access to GEM’s interdisciplinary doctoral training environment
- Participation in academic seminars and research workshops
- A collaborative peer network of doctoral scholars
Application Requirements
Interested applicants must submit:
- A completed application form
- A motivation letter (max. 1 page) explaining academic background and research interests
- A research proposal summary tied to GEM’s focus areas
- Certified copies of academic transcripts and degree certificates
- A certified ID/passport copy
- Proof of English language proficiency (if applicable)
In addition, three academic references must be submitted directly by referees to GEM via email.
Application Deadline
All documents must be submitted by 15 August 2025 to GEM@sun.ac.za. Late or incomplete applications will not be reviewed.
Selection Process
Only shortlisted applicants will be contacted. If no communication is received by 20 October 2025, it should be assumed the application was unsuccessful.
