The Matsumae International Fellowship was started in 1980 by the Matsumae International Foundation in Tokyo. This program invites excellent researchers from around the world to Japan. Named after Dr. Shigeyoshi Matsumae, a respected Japanese scientist. The fellowship aims to encourage global cooperation. The Matsumae Fellowship is a chance for scholars to connect with Japan's academic community. Expenses covered by Matsumae International Foundation Fellowships:
- A monthly living allowance of JPY 220,000 per month will be given to cover the cost of studying in Japan.
- JPY 120,000 will be given as a relocation allowance.
- Round-trip airfare of economy class will be given to scholars.
- Medical travel insurance will be given along with health coverage.
- The fellowship recipients are encouraged to participate in study tours in Japan.
- Participants are free to choose any institution in Japan for their study.
Number of Scholarships:
Around 15 International Fellowships in Japan under the Matsumae International Foundation for the year 2026.

Eligibility Criteria for Matsumae International Foundation Fellowship in Japan
Here are the eligibility criteria for the Matsumae International Fellowship 2025.
- All Citizens from across the globe are eligible to apply.
- Applicant must have a letter of invitation from the host institution in Japan.
- Applicant must have a doctorate degree.
- The age limit is a maximum of 45 Years.
- Applicant must have proficiency in English and Japanese language.
- Applicant must be working in his/her origin country.
- Applicant must not have visited Japan before.
Deadline
Applications for the International Fellowships in Japan by Matsumae International Foundation must be submitted by June 1, 2025, to June 30, 2025 (Japan Standard Time).
