Description

The John Innes Foundation, in partnership with the John Innes Centre, offers an exceptional opportunity through its premier Rotation PhD Programme. This prestigious initiative is one of the longest-running rotation-based doctoral programmes in the United Kingdom, designed specifically for aspiring researchers who want to build a solid scientific foundation before committing to a specific research project.

Selected participants will dive into an immersive research environment, working alongside world-leading scientists across three globally recognized institutions: the John Innes Centre, The Sainsbury Laboratory, and the Earlham Institute. The unique structure of this programme allows students to explore multiple cutting-edge scientific disciplines, develop diverse laboratory skills, and collaborate on real-world biological challenges before finalizing their dissertation topic and primary advisor.

Responsibilities & Research Culture

Students entering the program will experience a dynamic first year focused on exploration, training, and professional growth. Key elements of the program include: Research Rotations:

  • Undertake three distinct 10-week research rotations during the first year to explore different laboratory environments and scientific methodologies.
  • Broad Scientific Training: Gain hands-on experience and advanced training across diverse fields, including Plant Science, Microbiology, Genetics, Genomics, Computational Biology, and Crop Science.
  • Academic Autonomy: Take ownership of your academic path by choosing your permanent supervisor and final PhD research topic only after exploring multiple projects during the rotation phase.
  • Collaborative Network: Work closely with multidisciplinary teams of international scientists, enhancing your skills in scientific communication, experimental design, and innovative problem-solving

Funding Coverage & Benefits

This is a 4-year fully funded PhD programme. The financial support package is designed to provide complete peace of mind, allowing doctoral researchers to focus entirely on their studies and laboratory work. The scholarship provides:

  • Full Tuition Coverage: 100% of the tuition fees are covered for the entire four-year duration of the programme.
  • Living Stipend: Recipients receive a generous financial stipend to assist with daily living expenses, housing, and academic materials throughout the four years.
  • Comprehensive Research Support: Full access to state-of-the-art laboratory equipment, high-performance computing resources, and professional mentorship networks across the participating institutes.

Qualification & Eligibility Criteria

The John Innes Foundation seeks highly motivated, curious, and academically accomplished individuals ready to undertake advanced research in plant and microbial sciences. The eligibility requirements are:

  • Target Audience: The programme is strictly open to postgraduate applicants looking to pursue a full-time PhD. Nationality: Applications are welcome from both UK domestic and international candidates.
