Description
A postdoctoral position is available in the Microbial Biochemistry and Synthetic Biology group led by Dr. Lennart Schada von Borzyskowski at Leiden University. This role is part of the newly launched C5 Project, a European research consortium focused on engineering cyanobacteria for sustainable isoprene production. The successful applicant will contribute to the characterization and engineering of enzymes central to the isoprene biosynthesis pathway, supporting the development of bio-based alternatives to fossil-derived compounds.
Responsibilities
Research Focus
- Functional characterization of enzymes involved in isoprene biosynthesis
- Rational design and engineering of enzymes to optimize catalytic efficiency and stability
- Collaboration with consortium partners in synthetic biology, metabolic engineering, and bioprocessing
Qualification
Candidate Profile
Essential Qualifications:
- A Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Microbiology, or a related field
- Solid background in enzyme kinetics, protein engineering, or metabolic pathway optimization
- Hands-on experience with techniques such as recombinant protein expression, purification, and in vitro/in vivo enzyme assays
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to contribute to scientific writing and interdisciplinary collaboration
Preferred skills:
- Familiarity with cyanobacteria or microbial photosynthetic organisms
- Experience in genetic engineering and synthetic biology methods
- Demonstrated publication record in relevant fields
This position is embedded in the EU-funded C5 project, which brings together leading scientists across Europe, including the teams of Maria Agustina Dominguez-Martin, Henning Kirst, Steffen Lindner, Maria Barbosa, and Laura Martinelli. The selected postdoc will join an internationally collaborative and cross-disciplinary research environment that promotes innovation in sustainable biotechnology.
