Description

The School of Chemistry at the University of Melbourne invites applications for two postdoctoral fellowships in Environmental Chemistry, with a strong focus on biomonitoring of chemical contaminants. The successful candidates will contribute to an interdisciplinary program aimed at identifying and analyzing plastic-related compounds in human biological samples such as blood and urine. This role is supported by the Australian Laboratory for Emerging Contaminants and is part of the broader Pollution & Health Hallmark Research Initiative. The research will support efforts to assess and mitigate public exposure to environmental pollutants. 


Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities

  • Create and refine analytical techniques for identifying plastic-associated substances in biological fluids
  • Validate small-scale sample collection strategies for broader public health use
  • Participate in collaborative projects involving academics, industry, and government partners
  • Prepare and submit research papers and present findings at international scientific meetings
  • Provide administrative support related to graduate student tracking and academic events
  • Assist in developing competitive funding proposals for ongoing research 


Qualification

Candidate Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • A completed (or near-completed) PhD in environmental, analytical, or chemical sciences
  • Proven skills in advanced mass spectrometry and analytical instrumentation
  • A consistent publication record demonstrating scientific contribution
  • Strong ability to collaborate within diverse, multidisciplinary teams
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Organizational strengths, particularly in managing concurrent academic tasks
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office; familiarity with research administration systems preferred 


Desirable Skills

  1. Experience conducting field-based chemical analysis
  2. Familiarity with environmental sensor technologies and microsampling tools
  3. Background in plastic exposure analysis or related fields
  4. Competence in R, Python, MATLAB, or similar data processing software
